People who can just… just sit down and take out their homework and be like “time to work yes” and get things??? Without a problem and move on???. That is the assurance of overcoming procrastination. Studies show that approximately 25% of adults and teens are chronic procrastinators. Procrastination can break your future aim and purpose. It is painful when you realise late; this post will help and guide you in avoiding procrastination.
First, we need to understand what the word “procrastination” means. Procrastination is the action of deliberately proposing or avoiding work or activity, despite knowing its negative effect when you ignore it. The word has origin from the Latin procrastinatus, which itself developed from the prefix pro-, meaning “forward,” and crastinus, meaning “of tomorrow”. It is a common human experience involving delays in everyday chores or even putting off salient tasks, such as attending an appointment. E.t.c
“my advice is, never do to-to morrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time. Collar him!”
― Charles Dickens, David Copperfield
Why can procrastination be painful?
Procrastination is the act of neglecting a particular activity like your homework, which leads to not doing it or doing it very late, leading to less productivity. Procrastination weighs you down from achieving your full potential in your day-to-day activities like reading, writing, doing assignments and homework, filing documents, reports e.t.c.It is not a good attribute of an outstanding student or employee/employer.
Procrastination can harm student's schoolwork and grades. Assignment and classwork play a crucial part in helping to develop your grades. Procrastination would cause lower grades than peers when you don’t complete or submit on time; Also, when you don’t read material and notes on time and it is kept till the last minute of assessment, it can affect your grades. This is not a decent way for your academic journey and can lead to poor grades also lead to low self-confidence even in the next term or session of your academics.
Depression can also be a product of procrastination; inadequate planning and management of time can cause a pile of incomplete work. It could hurt your mental health. It leads to thinking when you find out you can’t complete your work before the deadline; this could be at your place of work or school look
Procrastination is one of the major causes of job loss. To have effective work, getting things done on time is key to success in all areas. You must be able to manage your time as the saying goes that “time is money”.
“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”
― Abraham Lincoln
The most painful effect of procrastination is not securing your future because of some mistakes of time; never put off till tomorrow what we can do today. Planning and management of time are necessary for achieving life's purpose. You may delay, but time will not, and lost time is never found again; keeping up to schedule and get things done on time helps us to be productive
Way to overcome procrastinationThe first step to overcoming procrastination is to recognise it. Discovering when procrastination is about to occur is the main and first step to placing procrastination behind. Tim Pychyl said that “We procrastinate because we give in to feeling good”. you get up late and suddenly realise that you are already the next afternoon and you have not finished what we planned to do. That is a sign of procrastination. Also giving up early when things get hard; you get discouraged and the best choice for you is to give up(not finding another way to solve the issue)
I encourage us to plan and manage our time; scheduling time helps you a lot in curbing procrastination. Look before you leap.
In planning, you can get a note on your phone or a hardcover, take a pen and plan your reading, eating, exam, and relaxation time. In planning, putting what is important the most is necessary. Prioritise your task on a scale of preference. If you have a more important task you have to submit, try to complete it first and do the less important task that has a longer deadline.
Reward yourself
“I redo what one has rewarded me for”
When one gets rewarded for a particular task or assignment, one repeats it in the future. Your brain loves to engage in a task that has a price and gift attached to it. Rewards can strongly drive our behaviour. This also helps in procrastination; to avoid it, reward yourself to repeatedly partake in the task. Let’s say you procrastinate in your academics and rewarding yourself when you complete a particular topic in that course allows you to cultivate the habit of reading.
A strategy that helps in overcoming procrastination is the two minutes rule inspired by David Allen
Two minutes rule helps you stop procrastinating and stick to good habits at the same time. The rule is simple: Starting a new habit should never take over two minutes to do. You can make a task as easy as possible to start. The two minutes is effective because the habit, even if it is two minutes, becomes easier to continue it
We can improve habits like reading before bed each night by reading just one page before each night.
Being determined and disciplined on a particular task is also important in staying focused and doing that task. You can imagine self-discipline as when you give yourself orders keeping motivated on that task and learn to maintain and work on the habit.
